What is the Black Heritage Society?

It is an organization with the mission of preserving the heritage and history of African Americans in the State of Washington.

How is this accomplished? Exactly what does the Black Heritage Society do?

The Collections Committee actively seeks donations to add to its collection of Washington State memorabilia. The Oral History Committee conducts and tapes interviews with individuals. The Exhibits Committee prepares exhibits for Society displays and offers exhibit material for organizations upon request when possible.

Where is the collection kept?

It is housed at the Museum of History & Industry with whom the Black Heritage Society has a written agreement.

How can one access something from the collection or use material for research?

A request must be made, in writing, to the President of the Black Heritage Society.

Is there any cost involved in acquiring exhibit material?

Costs include cost of providing photographs. The user also must provide transportation to and from the exhibit site.

How long has the Society been established?

Since 1977. It became a Washington State corporation in 1982.

How large is the membership?

As of June 2003, approximately 180 members.

When are the meetings?

The Board of Directors meets monthly on the second Saturday (except July and August). General membership meetings are held in October and January, with the Annual Meeting in May.
