Inside Business Series: Thompson’s Point of View

Opened on June 1, 1986, Thompson’s Point of View remains today as a prime location in Seattle for soul food. Located at 23rd and East Union the restaurant is brightened with red table cloths covered with glass on all of the tables. The walls boast a Jacob Lawrence print, and African mask and plaques and news articles in tribute to the culinary feats of the restaurant. Louise Thompson and her son Carl Jr. have run the establishment since its opening.

Louise was born in Fayette, Mississippi, grew up in Portland, Oregon and moved to Seattle in 1957, after her marriage to Carl Sr. She worked as a secretary to Attorney Archie Greenlee until the purchase of the restaurant. She attributes the success of her business to the advertisement provide by the Bon Marche during its Tribute to Black Pioneers.

For one week in 1986, she took over alol of the food concessions at the department store, breaking all sales records in the store’s history. 3,000 pounds of chitterlings were sold along with other soul food offerings.

Louise Thompson believes in providing a comfortable, friendly place for her clientele, allowing them to taste with their eyes first. The menu includes catfish, collard greens, gumbo, hallelujah wings, liver and onions, meat loaf, peach cobbler and pound cake.

Today the restaurant has a staff of eight and a popular bar in an adjacent room. A jukebox provides rhythm during the week and live music if offered Thursday through Sunday evenings. Carl Jr., is the financial supervisor while Louise supervises daily operations. The restaurant also provides catering services for 25 to 1,500 people.
